Congratulate your newly elected officials on their victories—and remind them that stopping NYRI is Priority No. 1!
Why
Although Eliot Spitzer recently proclaimed NYRI dead, it's simply not true. NYRI is very much alive and working mightily to overstep the authority of New York State so it can get quick approval by the federal government.
Why is this especially bad? The fate of energy projects that reach the federal level will be decided by FERC, a 6-person committee of political appointees, all of whom come from, yep, the energy business. FERC is not likely to closely examine the integrity of NYRI's project or its impact on Upstate New York. In fact, John Dingell, the ranking member of the House Energy Committee recently lambasted the EPAct 2005 for "...preempting state and local authority over transmission siting, diluting environmental laws on siting lines on public lands..."
In this new Congress, it may be reasonable to hope for revisions of the EPAct. 1 We need our elected officials to fight for exactly that.
